Sailing Away

We have left Calgary behind us and have headed south to find a warmer place where we can escape for a while, from the snow and cold weather.
We stayed in Fort Lauderdale for a few days, relaxed by the beach, did some wandering and short walks, but mostly just spent time hanging out together. 
The weather was not hot, but very comfortable and quite pleasant - very enjoyable and a welcome change to be out and about in just shorts and tee shirts.

Soon we will be going to the port to board the Island Princess and begin what we hope will be a very exciting voyage.

We have enjoyed several busy days recently and although a couple of those days were spent on board while enjoying scenic cruising, they were no less active than our shore days, and I did neglect the blog while being otherwise distracted. San Antonio, Chile

As we continue our journey south towards Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, we made a stop at the port of San Antonio. This is the place where a number of the ship’s passengers leave to return home, or to depart for other adventures in South America. For those who were leaving the ship today, it was one of early breakfasts, gathering one’s belongings and leaving the ship to connect with transportation to the airport, or to other land based destinations. We chose to avoid the worst of the early morning hustle and bustle, by staying in our cabin for a while longer and by taking breakfast a little later. After eating, we headed to the pool deck with our books and enjoyed a lazy couple of hours while catching up with our reading. A very pleasant way to spend the earlier part of our day. Manta, Ecuador ‘Tuna Fishing Capital of the World’

Manta is situated almost on the equator, only108 km south of it to be precise, on the coast of Western Ecuador, and the fabled Galápagos Islands, an archipelago belonging to Ecuador, are 1,000 km directly west of Manta. Ecuador is bordered to the north by Colombia, and to the south and east, by Peru. Manta has been inhabited since pre Colombian times, its history dates back to around 3,000 BC and has a  current population of around 260,000. Manta claims to be the ‘tuna capital of the world’. It is the largest sea port in Ecuador, the main port for tuna fishing in the Eastern Pacific and has the largest fishing fleet in South America. To put this information into perspective and perhaps validate this claim to ‘fame’, in the first 7 months of 2019, 105,000 tones of canned tuna were exported, not including the additional many tonnes of flash frozen, unprocessed tuna and other fish species.
